Whilst we were travelling around Australia we visited Phillip Island, home of Tiny Penguins and beautiful shells. I found a shell similar to Tim’s stamp and recreated the colours from the original. It brings back so many happy memories.
The background ground for the shell was stamped with other images from the set. I used Potting Soil Archival Ink. I used China Blue, Salty Ocean and Peacock Feathers to colour the sea.
The Shell was created with the Distress Watercolouring – Part 2 technique in Tim Holtz Compendium of Curiosities 3 book. I can’t tell you any details, you need your own
copy! I am entering Linda Ledbetter’s Challenge 20. There are some amazing prizes from Tim and Mario, plus the sponsor Funkie Junkie Boutique.
I decided to mount the shell on a small canvas, painted with Salty Ocean and Iced Spruce Distress Paint. I stencilled Dot Fade with pearlescent embossing paste. Then I layered burlap, scrunched vellum, dyed muslin, sparkly ribbon and chit chat stickers. I sewed the layers together.
I wanted to give the impression of the sea and rolling waves so I made small rolls with left over background paper and wired them with glass beads onto earring hooks. I poked holes in the canvas and threaded them through.
The seashell word was stamped and embossed with gold to stand out on the background. I love the sand effects behind the shell. I used Mustard Seed, Spiced Marmalade, Scattered Straw and Pumice Stone.
I was really inspired by this technique to create the canvas. Hope you enjoy looking at it!

Jan….this is absolutely stunning! I so love that deep color of blue that you have painted the canvas in the background. Does that goldish yellow torn paper that you’ve stamped your blueprint seashell ever POP against that blue!?! WOW! So striking! Your seashell is beautifully colored and you’ve really done a fantastic job of the watercoloring part 2 technique here. WoW!! This is just gorgeous and I LUV those dangled embellishments you created. My favorite is to create our embellishments instead of always using something premade, and you’ve done that brilliantly. Your technique is perfect, of course. Very, very cool!

CONGRATS!!!! This was prob my fave out of the ones I thought were SO LOVELY!!! I guess that might be a bit biased since I am totally a creature of the ocean!! Ha! Seriously; it’s my absolute favorite place to be- the salt-air breeze, the breaking roughness of the waves crashing, the warm sun on your back, and the grit of the sand (in your swimsuit….and in the car….and in your suitcases…aaaaall the way back to Indiana. I LOVE IT!!! And looking for the perfect shells to bring home is always done on our walks. So I truly understand where your inspiration came from! And Tim’s ‘Sand & Sea’ die sets were on order and waiting for me at home while we were sailing the Bahamas- I just HAD to have THAT set!!! And perhaps I will be able to find the stamps SOON!! You did the stamp & watercoloring so BEAUTIFULLY!!! I am so humbled to be crafting alongside so many TALENTED people!!! 😀 Enjoy your Laurel Wreath for this !
